Mackay to Hosted Premier High School Esports Showdown
From 30–31 August, Central Queensland University Mackay was transformed into a high-energy esports arena as high school gamers from across the greater Mackay Region battled it out in an electrifying tournament like no other. The event was officially opened by the Mayor of Mackay, who welcomed students, parents, teachers, and community members, setting the tone for a weekend of inclusive competition and celebration.
Proudly delivered by QUT and supported by the Department of Social Services, Queensland Government, Queenslanders with Disability Network, headspace, and the Mackay Regional Council, the tournament showcased both fierce competition and strong community spirit.
🎮 The Competition
Across two days of Rocket League and Marvel Rivals action, players demonstrated skill, teamwork, and resilience in front of a live crowd. It was here that Team Mackay was identified — the squad who will now represent the region on the big stage in Brisbane at the QLD State EsportsAble Championship.
Through the EsportsAble we gathered insights directly from young people, families, and local stakeholders about esports and its role in building inclusive opportunities across Mackay Queensland.
🏆 What Made the Event Special
Parents, teachers, and community members actively supported the players, turning the event into a true celebration of youth achievement.
FREE access to the EsportsAble Academy gave competitors tools to supercharge their gameplay.
Live coaching from professional esports players and mentors inspired future pathways.
Immersive virtual reality experiences, community stalls, and giveaways ensured fun for spectators as well as players.
QDN mentors were on site, providing valuable guidance, encouragement, and inclusion, ensuring every young person felt supported.
A headspace chill-out zone, complete with Marvellous boardgames and quiet spaces, offered students and families a safe space to recharge and connect.
The Mayor’s opening remarks, coupled with the energy of the crowd, highlighted how esports can bring entire communities together.
🎮 Practice Sessions
In the weeks leading up to the event, local libraries — Gordon White Library and Dudley Denny City Library — hosted open practice sessions. These helped students of all levels prepare, connect, and build confidence before stepping onto the tournament stage.
The Mackay tournament didn’t just crown a winning team; it strengthened community ties, highlighted the value of safe and inclusive spaces for young people, and gave everyone — parents, teachers, mentors, and teens — a glimpse into the future of competitive gaming in Queensland.
👉 With Team Mackay now heading to Brisbane, the region will be proudly represented in the State Finals of the EsportsAble Championship.
