Showcasing safe, respectful, and inclusive esports!
In 2025, the EsportsAble project hosted a series of esports tournaments across six regional Queensland cities: Toowoomba, Mount Isa, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, and Cairns. These events aimed to foster inclusivity and provide high school students with opportunities to engage in safe competitive gaming, culminating in a Queensland State High School Championship in Brisbane.
Competition format: The local tournaments were held in a biathlon format, meaning that to be crowned “local champion” the teams needed to perform well in two very different types of esports.
Rocket League: Teams of three competed in Rocket League, emphasizing teamwork and strategy in this fast-paced vehicular soccer game.
Marvel Rivals: Teams of six competed in Marvel Rivals, testing their versatility and tactical skills in a modified first-person shooter game.
Tournament structure and prizes:
Each local tournament ran over 1-2 days and was limited to 10 teams, ensuring focused competition and ample playtime for all participants.
Winners in each game received prizes recognizing their achievements.
The top-performing team overall, demonstrating excellence across both Rocket League and Marvel Rivals, received funding to travel to Brisbane for the state championship, representing their region on a larger stage.
